About the cylinder calculator
A cylinder is a circle extruded along a straight axis. Its volume is the base area times the height, πr²h. Two values fix any cylinder. The calculator also works backwards from volume and total surface area, a classic can-design problem that has no simple formula.
Formulas
| Volume | V = πr²h |
| Lateral area | L = 2πrh |
| Total surface | S = 2πr(r + h) |
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the volume of a cylinder?
V = πr²h. A can with radius 3 cm and height 8 cm holds 72π ≈ 226.2 cm³.
How do I find the height from the volume?
h = V/(πr²).
How much liquid does a cylindrical tank hold?
Compute V in your length unit cubed; the results panel converts it to litres and gallons.
